The Origins of Tobacco & the Pipe
Now if you're asked where your pipe and tobacco come from you might be tempted to say TinderBox or from some chap off ebay named buzzedpipe in Fargo, ND. But where do all pipes and tobaccos come from- what is their provenance, eons and eons ago, who decided man should smoke? So here then hobbyist, collector, and fellow chimney-sporting appendages, are the origins of the pipe and tobacco!
One credible source, a pipe and cigar loving doctor and publisher from California (I'm serious) named Benjamin Kline compiled a short and lively list of pipe and cigar quotes in 1996 entitled Pipefuls and Old Stogies. He recites an old North American folk tale:
A coyote had offered grievous insult to the head of a slain buffalo bull. A living bull pursued him to avenge his kinsman, but Manitou, the Great Spirit, taking pity on the coyote's weakness, gave him the first pipe and first tobacco. To the angry bull the pipe was offered as he flung himself at his enemy; and as he smoked the coyote said to him: "It will be thus in later times, when there will be many people. When they are angry with one another they will smoke to make their hearts feel good."

Another lovely but true fable comes from much longer ago in the year 1859 from a precious little book printed in Piccadilly, London by F.W. Fairholt, entitled Tobacco: Its History and Associations. This quote is attributed to a Susquehanna Indian in a conversation with a Swedish minister then present and no doubt hell bent on delivering the pagan to a land of righteousness:
In the beginning we had only flesh of animals to eat; and if they failed, we starved. Two of our hunters having killed a dear, and broiled a part of it, saw a young woman descend from the clouds, and seat herself on a hill hard by. Said one to the other: "It is a spirit, perhaps, that has smelt our venison; let us offer some of it to her." They accordingly gave her the tongue; she was pleased with its favor and said: "Your kindness shall be rewarded; come here thirteen moons hence, and you shall find it." They did so; and found where her right hand had touched the ground, maize growing; where her left hand had been, kidney beans; and where she had sat, they found tobacco."
