Hello everyone. The sealing ring on Falcons... They were introduced to bowls manufactured in Falcon's Dublin factory from early 1964,according to new blueprints dated 18.10.1963. The ring measures .028" (thick) and this added 1/8"to the thread dimension plus an allowance for the extra material left on the mating face of the casting which was practised to avoid feathering away the first thread in the casting gave us a length of .160". This length could vary +/- .005"... Any Falcon bowl fitted with a ring definitely originated outside the United States (or was made pre-1964), as rings were never used in the Chicago factory. All this and more surprisingly technical stuff is from my new favourite book, about these pipes. They designed the ring/bowl combination so that it would fit the 5 million (at that time) frames already in use in the UK, and because of the design of the thread the bowls may be used without rings, provided the mating face of the casting is perfectly flat. cheers Peter australian pipe club.
