It is interesting how that Calabash Pipes have become synonymous with detectives when Arthur Conan Doyles fictional detective never actually smoked a calabash. The calabash pipe started being used by actors in plays in London and then in film because as a prop, it made more of a statement than the smaller bowled-pipes that Holmes of the original stories seemed to favor.

Many different types. His favorite was not the calabash, as many people assume (it is never mentioned in the books) but rather the long stemmed briar pipe known as a Churchwarden. He is also mentioned using a clay pipe. The pipe he is most commonly depicted with, and that has become synonymous with his name, is however the Calabash.

not, was invented by an American
William Gillette {a noted stage actor}

and soon became a standard part of Holme's

Σαυτο εχεις δικιο αλλα εχει μεινει (λογω ταινιων) calabash & Holms να εναι
συνωνυμα [ παρολο που υπαρχουν και πολλες σκηνες που καπνιζει
churchwarden η κατι παρομοιες εν πασει περιπτωση]. |

Ωραίοι!
Γεγονός είναι ότι στα έργα του Doyle, δε φαίνεται ξεκάθαρα τί πίπες προτιμά ο Σέρλοκ - οι μοναδικές αναφορές του Watson στον εξοπλισμό του Holmes είναι όταν αναφέρεται στην μακριά ξύλινη πίπα που καπνίζει ο φίλος του όταν είναι σε αντιρρητική διάθεση, ενώ προτιμά την μαύρη πήλινη πίπα του στις άλλες περιπτώσεις - calabash καπνίζει ο Holmes μόνο στο ταξίδι αναψυχής στην Ελβετία πριν την αποφασιστική αναμέτρηση με τον καθηγητή Μοριάρτι  |

Μιλάμε για έναν ήρωα που δεν υπήρξε ποτέ. Οπότε η σωστή πίπα είναι αυτή που αναφέρει ο εφευρέτης του ήρωα. Αργότερα του κόλλησαν μια Calabash νομίζω επειδή αυτή η πίπα ξεχωρίζει και λόγω χρωμάτων και λόγω μεγέθους σε εποχές που το μεγαλύτερο ποσοστό των καπνιστών κάπνιζε πίπα. Έπρεπε ο ήρωας να ξεχωρίζει.
